Essay Contest – 7th & 8th Grade

The Texas Division United Daughters of the Confederacy sponsors a yearly essay contest for students in the 7th and 8th grades.

Essays must be submitted through a chapter, who will then submit their winning essays to the Division for judging.

What is the history and significance of Confederate Heroes Day in Texas?

OR

Patriots Twice: Former CSA enlisted men or officers from Texas who made contributions to the United States after the War Between the States

DEADLINE:

April 15th is the deadline for essays to be submitted to the TX Division.

Contact your local/sponsoring Chapter for the Chapter’s deadline for entries.

Awards in Each Category

First Place – $100

Second Place – $75

Third Place – $50

Guidelines for Students

1.All essays are to be 600-850 words.  Place word count at end of each composition.

2.Dates (February 23, 2019) and names (Robert E. Lee) for example, shall be counted as one word.

3.Items not considered in word count are as follows: title, cover sheet information, and bibliographical references.

4.The original and four (4) copies (total of 5 copies of each essay) of your entry must be sent to the sponsoring chapter to be judged.

5.The top three (3) essays on each subject will be submitted by the Chapter to the Division Second Vice President.  A committee of five (5) judges will score all chapter winning essays to determine Division winners.

Format

1.If written on computer, use Times New Roman font, size 12

2.If handwritten, writing must be legible.

3.Typed or handwritten – double space on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper.

4.Pages are to be numbered at the top center beginning with the first page of the essay itself.

5.Margins must be at least one (1) inch on all four (4) sides.

6.Essays must be submitted in English.

References

1.Online textbooks, lectures by well-known historians, or publications from reputable institutions are acceptable.

2.Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable Internet source.

Cover Page

1.First cover page should be centered and include: (1) essay title and (2) name of student and whether 7th or 8th grade.

2.The following information may be at the bottom of the page, left hand side: (1) submitting chapter name/number, (2) The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Texas Division and (3) chapter contact person with contact information page.

3.Second cover page: essay title only, centered horizontally and vertically.

Bibliography

1.Books: Author last name, first name; Title of Book, Publisher, City of Publication, Date.  *Please note pages where information is located.

2.Internet: Author last name, first name, Title of Article, webpage address.

3.Other: Author or Editor’s name, Title, Source, Location of source.
